The Philippine Green Building Council (PhilGBC) has launched the latest version of BERDE Green Building Rating System (GBRS), BERDE – Version 4.0.0, last June 22, 2021. BERDE GBRS – Version 4.0.0 introduced a few socio-economic priorities for green buildings, including impacts of the project to health and well-being, community engagement, and economic opportunities.
Sustainable development
According to Mr. Edgar V. Sabidong, Chair of the PhilGBC Board of Trustees, “BERDE – Version 4.0.0 has further expanded our outlook when building green. This version reflects our commitment for sustainable development, where we address not just the environmental priorities, but we also introduced a stronger focus on the socio-economic aspects of green building.”
BERDE GBRS – Version 4.0.0 introduced two new core frameworks, namely, Community Engagement and Economic Opportunity, in addition to the nine existing frameworks from Version 3.1.0, namely: management, use of land and ecology, energy, water, waste, materials, transportation, health and well-being (formerly referred to as indoor environmental quality in previous versions), and emissions.
Best practices
The Department of Energy’s (DOE) 2020 Edition of the Guidelines for Energy Conserving Design of Buildings were incorporated during the development of BERDE GBRS Version 4.0.0 to ensure that green buildings align with current energy regulations and best practices.
Aside from the core frameworks, PhilGBC also aimed to improve user experience when using the tool. The changes in the latest version also included clearer intent for the credits, and improved guidance on how projects should comply with the requirements.
Last April 7, 2021, PhilGBC has also launched the first quarter release of the Green Building Procurement Hub (Green Building/PH), which featured the new format of the hub and new green building products and services to support BERDE green building projects.
